As Head of the Department for The School of Medical Radiation Technology (SMRT), Dr. Darrion Walker is immensely proud to lead an initiative that addresses a critical need in Jamaica’s healthcare sector. In response to the government of Jamaica’s request, SMRT launched two postgraduate certificate programmes in Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to train specialist radiographers. This initiative, supported by significant government investment in radiology and championed by the professional radiography society, reflects a shared commitment to advancing healthcare through specialized training.
Currently, we have 18 students enrolled in the CT programme and 12 in the MRI programme, all of whom are thriving and have successfully completed the first of five modules with remarkable engagement. The success of these programmes hinges on the power of teamwork. Collaboration among our dedicated faculty, motivated students, and supportive government and professional partners has created a dynamic learning environment. By working together, we share knowledge, foster innovation, and ensure that our curriculum meets the highest standards, preparing our students to excel as skilled radiographers who will elevate Jamaica’s healthcare system.
This spirit of unity and collective effort is the cornerstone of our achievements so far. This is just the first of multiple offerings for these programmes, and I am optimistic about their growth. With continued collaboration and increasing interest, we expect these programmes to expand as we seek to train even more radiographers to meet the evolving needs of our healthcare sector. I am honoured to lead this transformative journey at SMRT and look forward to the lasting impact our graduates will have on Jamaica’s healthcare landscape.
